Parkinson’s disease is?
A progressive neurological disorder affecting dopamine
What is the theory of developing Parkinson’s disease?
An imbalance of dopamine and acetylcholine in the CNS
Drug therapy for Parkinson’s disease is aimed at doing what?
Increasing the supply of dopamine in the brain, and/or blocking or lowering the acetylcholine levels
What are some symptoms of Parkinson’s disease?
(TRAP) Tremors, Rigidity, Akinesia, Postural instability
What kind of drug can be given to increase dopamine levels in the brain?
(Sinemet) car idols-levodopa
What does carbidopa-levodopa do to increase dopamine levels?
They inhibit MAO enzymes from breaking down dopamine so there are more
What enzymes prolong the action of levodopa?
Catechol- ortho methyltransferase (COMT)
What are some side effects of antiparkinsons drugs?
Nausea, vomitting, arrhythmia, paranoia
What kind of instructions would you give to someone taking an antiparkinsons disease drug?
Take with food 30 minutes before a high protein meal
Change positions slowly
