Auscultation

Definition: listening for sounds within the body, usually using a stethoscope
Rales
Definition: Crackle-like lung sounds heard through stethoscope during inspiration
Rhonchi
Definition: course rattling sounds somewhat like snoring, usually caused by secretions in the bronchial airways
Stridor
Definition: abnormal, high-pitched, musical breathing sound caused by a blockage in the throat or in larynx
Bruit
Definition: abnormal sound or murmur heard during auscultation of an artery, usually due to a partially blocked, narrowed, or diseased artery
Heart murmur
Definition: abnormal heart sound, usually a sign of defective heart valves
Palpation
Definition: examination technique of using hands to feel texture, size, consistency, and location of certain body parts
Percussion
Definition: diagnostic procedure that determines density of a body part by sound produced by tapping surface with fingers
Speculum
Definition: instrument used to enlarge and opening or cavity to facilitate inspection of it’s interior, especially vagina

Phlebotomy

Definition: venipuncture, puncture of a vein for the purpose of drawing blood

Suffix: crit - to separate
Definition: describes percentage, by volume, of a blood sample occupied by red cell
Diagnose abnormal hydration, anemia, and polycythemia
Albuminuria
Root: albumin - albumin or protein
Suffix: uria - urine
Definition: the presence of in the protein albumin in the urine
High is a sign of impaired kidney function
Bacteriuria

Definition: the presence of bacteria in the urine
Calciuria
Root: calci - calcium

Definition: the presence of calcium in the urine
