Ch 15 Flashcards
Tropical rain forest
Biome that produces lush thick forest, warm consistent temperatures and abundant precipitation/rainfall all year.
Tropical grassland(savanna)
Biome where vegetation includes tall grasses, scattered trees & shrubs, warm temperatures throughout year + definite dry & rainy seasons
Grassland
Area where primary life is grass
Temperate grassland
Biome that is dry and warm, and precipitation falls as snow + spreading fires are common
Desert
Biome that has very dry climate, little precipitation + 4 types: hot, semi-arid, coastal, & cold
Temperate deciduous forest
Biome that has hot summers, cold winters, and precipitation is spaced out evenly over the year; broadleaf forest dominates
Temperate rainforest
Biome that has 1 long wet season, and relatively dry summers(fog + low-lying clouds); evergreen conifer dominates
Taiga(boreal forest)
Biome with long, cold winters, and short, warm, humid summers; precipitation is 30-85 cm per year
Tundra
Biome where ground is frozen where only mosses and other low-lying plants survive; winter lasts as long as long as 10 months a year; permafrost captures and holds moisture
Chaparral
Biome that occurs globally on a small scale + hot/dry summers & cold/moist winters; dominated by small-leaved evergreen shrubs
Polar ice caps
Few plants of fungi(mosses & lichen), animals depend on the sea for food; don’t have communities
Mountain
Animals & plant communities change depending on elevation; rich with life + different communities/climate(too many varieties)
