Ch. 14 Wigs & Hair Additions Flashcards
Braid-and-Sew-Method
also known as a weave, attachment method in which hair extensions are secured to the client’s own hair by sewing braids or a weft onto an on-the-scalp braid or cornrow, which is sometimes called the track
Capless Wigs
also known as open caps; machine-made from human or artificial hair that is woven into rows of wefts; wefts are then sewn to elastic strips in a circular pattern to fit the head shape
Cap Wigs
wigs constructed of elasticized, mesh-fiber bases to which the hair is attached
Fallen Hair
hair that has been shed from the head or gathered from a hairbrush, as opposed to hair that has been cut; the cuticles of the strands will move in different directions (opposite of turned or remy hair)
Fusion Bonding
method of attaching extensions in which extension hair is bonded to the client’s own hair with a keratin bonding material that is activated by heat from a special tool
Hair Additions
hair or synthetic fibers added or integrated at the base of a person’s natural hair
Hair Extensions
hair additions that are secured to the base of the client’s natural hair to add length, volume, texture, or color
Hairpieces
small wig used to cover the top or crown of the head, or a hair attachment of some sort
Hand-Tied Wigs
also known as hand-knotted wigs; wigs made by inserting individual strands of hair into mesh foundations and knotting them with a needle
Integration Hairpieces
made with hair that matches the client’s existing hair texture and color; commonly used for severely thinning hair; not suitable for complete hair loss
Linking
commonly known as I-tips or individual tip; method of attaching hair extensions in which a hook is used to pick a small amount of hair off a parting; a link is moved close to the scalp with a special tool, then an extension or special addition strand is inserted into the link
Machine-Made Wigs
wigs made by machine by feeding wefts through a sewing machine, then sewing them together to form the base and shape of the wig; commonly made with synthetic fibers
Remy Hair
hair with an intact cuticle layer; considered most realistic and highest quality of hair for extensions, wigs, and hairpieces
Toupees
small wigs used to cover the top or crown of the head
Turned Hair
also called remy hair; cuticle hair
