Backbrushing
also known as ruffing; technique used to build a soft cushion or to mesh two or more curl patterns together for a uniform and smooth comb out
Backcombing
also known as teasing, ratting, matting, or French lacing; combing small sections of hair from the ends toward the scalp, causing shorter hair to mat at the scalp and form a cushion or base
Bantu Knot
also known as Nubian knot; style where hair is double-strand twisted or coil twisted and wrapped around itself to make a knot; knots are secured by bobby pins or elastic bands
Bantu Knot-Out Style
style where knots can be opened and released to create wavy and fuller loose spiral curls
Barrel Curls
pin curls with large center openings; fastened to the head in a standing position on a rectangular base
Base
stationary, or nonmoving, foundation of a pin curl (the area closest to the scalp); the panel of hair on which a roller is placed
Blowdry Styling
technique of drying and styling damp hair in a single operation
Braid-Out Set
style that involves individual braiding or cornrowing the hair, when the hair is either wet or dry, then opening the braid to create a crimped texture-on-texture effect with added volume
Bun
also known as a knot; the foundation technique used for this look is a ponytail and can sit high or low
Carved Curls
also known as carved or sculptured curls; pin curls sliced from a shaping and formed without lifting the hair from the head
Cascade Curls
also known as stand-up curls; pin curls fastened to the head in a standing position to allow the hair to flow upward and then downward
Chignon
a classic updo designed around a ponytail; a technique used in formal hairstyling
Circle
the part of the pin curl that forms a complete circle; also, the hair that is wrapped around the roller
Closed-Center Curls
pin curls that produce waves that get smaller toward the ends
Coil-Out
style where hair is comb coiled into individual coils, dried completely, then uncoiled or neatly unraveled to create a fuller, coily, textured Afro style
Coily Method
weekly styling regimen used to achieve the coil ‘n’go/wash ‘n’ go style on very coily, tightly coiled, and highly textured hair created with palm coiling, or palm rolling, and finger coil techniques
Comb Coil Technique
typically styled on naturally curly, coily, or highly textured hair. This technique is also used to start locs
Comb Twists
style where small sections of natural hair are spiraled with fingers or comb with desired styling product to create individual formations of tight cylindrical coils
Concentrator Nozzle
nozzle attachment of a blowdryer; directs the air stream to any section of the hair more intensely
Co-Styling
textured hair styling techniques performed at night to preserve a textured style, then covered with a silk or satin bonnet/scarf to preserve a long-lasting textured style
Co-Wash
cleansing conditioner that refreshes and adds moisture to the hair in-between weekly shampoo routine
Curl
also known as circle; the hair that is wrapped around the roller
Curl ‘n’ go/ Coil ‘n’ go
also known as wash ‘ n ’ go; styling method that achieves a free curly or coily defined texture after a cleanser, conditioner, or co-wash; followed by a leave-in conditioner, curl-enhancing cream, gel or foam; hand-styling after hooded dryer, air drying, and /or diffuser
Curly Method
weekly hair styling regimen used to achieve the curl ‘n’ go/wash ‘n’ go hairstyle on wavy, curly, and coily hair textures
Edge Control
used on highly textured or chemically relaxed hair to smooth and control fine hair around the face’s perimeter, similar to pomade, provides hold and sleek finish
Double Press
technique of passing a hot curling iron through the hair before performing a hard press
End Curls
used to give a finished appearance to hair ends turned either under or over
Finger Coil
technique of gathering small sections of hair and twirling hair around fingers to create the coils
Finger Waving
process of shaping and directing the hair into an S pattern through the use of fingers, combs, and waving lotion
