Psychopharmacology
The study of how psychoactive drugs enter the body, affect the nervous system, and influence behavior, emotion, perception, and consciousness
Pharmacokinetics
The study of the ways the body affects the drug once administered
Pharmacodynamics
The study of the mechanisms of how the drug affects the body
Affinity
The degree to which a drug binds to a synaptic receptor or transporter
Efficacy
The actions of a drug on a synapse and how the drug effects the neuron and behavior
Bioavailability
The amount of the administered drug that makes its way to the site of action in the body
Insufflation
Drug administered through blowing or snorting gas, powder, or vapor into the body
Direct agonist
A drug that binds and activates a receptor
Indirect agonist
A drug that does not bind to the receptor but helps the neurotransmitter
Delirium tremens
A symptom of alcohol withdrawal syndrome causing confusion, hallucinations, and shaking
Teratogen
Negatively affects the development of a fetus
Ego-dissolution
A potential effect of taking hallucinogens where one feels they are separate from their body
Dissociative hallucinogens
A class of hallucinogens that are typically more dangerous than psychedelics. Associated with ego dissolution
Metabolic tolerance
A type of physiological tolerance where the liver and other organs produce more enzymes to eliminate drugs from the system

Powerful opioid antagonist
