Chapter 2 Flashcards
Sensory (affarent) neuron
Takes info to the spinal cord
Motor (efferent) neuron
Info to muscle or gland from from the spinal cord
Glial cells
Replicate, maintain function, prune dead cells, create myelin, act in immune system, help in neuron communication
Astrocytes
A glial cell- nutrients, repair, help in signals, protects blood brain barrier
Oligodendrocytes
A type of glial cell that creates myelin, aids in development
Microglia
Immune function, removal of dead neurons (pruning)
Schwann cells
Glial cell in the peripheral NS
Creates myelin
Creates pathway for regrowing axons after injury

Somatic
Conscious muscle movement
Autonomic
Not consciously controlled
Sympathetic
Fight or flight
Parasympathetic
Low arousal
Dura mater
Thick outer meninges
Layer against the skull
Pia mater
Thin membrane follows cerebral cortex
Arachnoid
Weblike between pia and dura
Contains CSF and blood vessels
Cerebral spinal fluid
Removes waste
Clear liquid made by choroid plexus
In spinal cord, around brain, ventricles
Ventricles
Spaces in the brain
