Ch. 13 Gene Technology Flashcards
Artificially made pieces of single-stranded DNA that are 20 to 30 nucleotides long
Primers
Technique that quickly produces many copies of a DNA fragment. Requires template
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
Bacterial proteins that cut long DNA molecules into shorter pieces
Restriction enzymes
Way to study DNS fragments. Separates nucleic acids or proteins according to their size and charge
Gel electrophoresis
Results from gel electrophoresis. Used in crime labs
DNA finger print
Altering the genetic material of cells or organisms to allow them to make new substances
Genetic engineering
Results when DNA from two different organisms is joined
Recombinant DNA
Exact copy of a DNS segment, whole cell, or a complete organisms
Clone
DNAs that can replicate whit bin a cell usually a bacterium or yeast. Can carry foreign DNA
Vectors
Small rings of DNA found naturally in some bacterial cells in addition to the main bacterial chromosome
Plasmid
Strand of RNA or single stranded DNA that is labeled with a radioactive element or fluorescent dye.
Probe
Research effort undertaken to sequence all of our DNA and locate within it all of the functionally important sequences
Human genome project
A genetic disorder is treated by introducing a gene into a patients cell
Gene therapy
