Cannon-Bard theory
The theory that an emotion-arousing stimulus simultaneously triggers a physiological responses and the subjective experiences of emotion.
James-Lange theory
The theory that our experience of emotion is our awareness of our physiological responses to emotion arousing stimuli.
Schachter-singer two factor theory
In order to experience emotion one must be physically aroused and cognitively label the arousal.
Emotions
A response of the whole organism involving physiological arousal, expressive behaviors, and conscious experience.
The spillover effect
Occurs when our arousal from one event influences our response to other events.
Polygraph
A machine used to detect lies. Measures several physiological responses accompanying emotion.
Paul Ekman
Defined expression as one of 46 action units.
Catharsis
Releasing aggressive energy relieves aggressive urges.
Feel good, do good phenomenon
People’s tendency to be helpful when already in a good mood.
Subjective wellbeing
Self perceived happiness or satisfaction with life
Adaption-level phenomenon
Our tendency to judge various stimuli relative to those we have previously experienced.
Relative deprivation
The perception that one is worse off compared to those whole we compare ourselves too.
