ch. 11 Flashcards
redox reduction
oxidation reduction reaction
reaction with a transfer of e-
oxidation vs reduction
oxidation: lose e-
reduction: gain e-
reducing agent
oxidizing agent
reducing agent: what is oxidized
oxidizing agent: what is reduced
galvanic cell
device in which chemical energy is changed to electrical energy
spontaneous
reduction happens at cathode
oxidation happens at anode
cell potential
driving force in galvanic cell that pulls e- from one compartment to the other
anode–> cathode
standard reduction potential
E^o >0 is more spontaneous
concentration cell
standard cell reduction potential = 0 so
E=-0.0591/n * log(Q)
Electrolysis
-reaction which requires a current to be driven
-changes electrical energy to produce chemical energy
reverse galvanic cell reaction
nonspontaneous
batteries how they work
E
batteries act like galvanic cell while discharging
- stored chemical energy is discharging and turning into electrical energy
- E is the max potential energy that the battery has before the current starts flowing
when the battery dies, E=0 and reaction is at equilibrium
Lithium ion batteries
lithium ions spontaneously go from anode to cathode
when you charge your phone, electrolysis occurs and you move lithium ions from cathode to anode nonspontaneously
fuel cells
galvanic cell where the reactants are continually supplied
- you have to constantly supply it with a chemical
- pump in a fuel, do an electrochemical reaction, and then exhaust the byproducts out
galvanization
process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron to prevent iron oxidation
