Ch 10 Infection Control Flashcards
What two agencies provide recommendations for BEST PRACTICES ?
OSHA and the CDC.
The CDC introduced ________ ___________ in the 1980’s in response to HIV and HBV cases.
Universal Precautions.
What are two ways that a pathogen can be transmitted from one person to another.
Fromite (like a pen or medical equipment) or a Vector (like a bug.)
What are the 4 most common forms of disease causing micro-organisms?
Viruses, bacteria, Fungi, protozoa
An environment conducive to pathogen survival is known as a ____.
Reservoir
The condition of being free from infection or infectious material is called ____.
Asepsis
Medical Asepsis removes _____ where as Surgical Asepsis removes __________.
Reduces the number of micro-organisms. Removes all of the micro-oganisms.
For good hand hygiene, washing hands should last at least how long (rubbing under water.)
20 seconds.
What areas of hands should also be washed with friction?
Near and under the nails.
Should washing hands happen after glove removal?
Yes.
If hands are visibly dirty is sanitizer ok to use?
No
When can 60% alcohol hand sanitizer be used?
If clean water and soap are not available.
The first step in assuring that a piece of medical equipment is clean is _______________.
Sanitization
What is the goal of sanitization?
To reduce the number of microbes to a lower level so that the equipment is ready to undergo sterilization or disinfection.
What PPE should be worn during sanitization?
Gloves. Thick ones if cleaning sharps.
What is ultrasonic sanitization and how is it used?
Ultrasound removes debris on delicate equipment that can not be wiped. It is safer for sharps too.
What is Disinfection?
The process of destroying pathogens on a surface. After sanitization (cleaning off debris). It destroys a lot but not all microbes.
What chemicals are used for disinfection?
Gluaraldehyde (requires a long submersion time.) Or a 1:10n bleach solution.
What is sterilization and how is it achieved?
The use of heat, gas, chemicals, ultraviolet or ionizing radiation chemicals or steam in an Autoclave.
Endoscopes involve 7 steps in disinfection/sterilization. What are they?
1.Pre-cleaning, 2. Leak testing, 3. Manual Cleaning, 4. Rinse, 5. High-level disinfection, 6. Drying (forced air and hang after)
What 2 things provide the healthcare worker with the tools and resources to maintain a safe clinical work environment?
The use of PPE and OSHA Material Saftey Data Sheets (SDS).
Where would you find information on Accidental Release measures?
(SDS) Safety Data Sheets
What is an Exposure Control Plan?
Written plan covering all scenarios regarding emergency procedures in the event of a community biological/traumatic event.
