Typologies of Rape
Efforts have been made to create typologies based on differences in victims/offender relationships and circumstances under which rape occurs. These typologies are as follows:
- Date Rape
- Stranger Rape
- Spousal or Marital Rape
- Child Rape
- Prison Rape
- Serial Rape

According to the FBI method, there are two broad typologies within which a rapist can be classified:

2. The Selfish Rapist
Six Rape classifications,and their general offending characteristics, are identified by the FBI:
- Power Reassurance(pseudo-selfish)
- Power Assertive
- Anger Retaliatory
- Anger Excitement
- Opportunistic
- Gang
Rape is motivated by the offenders feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem in situations and relationships with women. Referred to as Gentleman’s rapist, minimal force used, victims are strangers and attacks during periods when feelings of personal inadequacy peak.
Power Reassurance Rapist
An inflated masculine self-concept and desire to dominate women are the main motivating factors for committing rape. Cons victims into compliance by using charm or personal appeal then becomes aggressive, inflicts moderate to high levels of physical injury on victims, strikes in an irregular opportunistic manner.
Power Assertive Rapist
Openly hates and despises women and is motivated by rape as a means of demeaning women and inflicting punishment on them. Uses extreme injurious physical force, tears victims clothes, attacks are spontaneous and unplanned in a blitz fashion, does not restrict offending activity to particular geographic areas and targeted victims may be persons who cause the offender to be angry or resemble a person in the offenders past.
Anger Retaliatory Rapist
This type of Rapist is also known as a sexual sadist, victims are of both genders, injury is usually extreme, attacks are carried out by conning the victim into a position of trust and then unleashing an extremely violent and bizarre sexual attack on the victim. Extreme preplanning of the criminal event along the lines of the offenders bizarre sexual fantasies.
Anger Excitement Rapist
Rape is motivated by sexual desire, and is usually an unplanned offense committed as a secondary crime following a planned robbery or burglary, may be under the influence, minimal force is used
Opportunistic Rapist
Depending on their sexual behaviors and offending patterns, pedophiles can be categorized in the following five categories.
- Inductive
- Fixated
- Regressed
- Exploitative
- Aggressive
