Ch. 10 Flashcards
This occurs when researchers manipulate at least one variable and measure another
Experiment
A variable that is controlled
Manipulated variable
These are records of behavior or attitudes (self reports, behavioral observation, physiological
Measured variable
This variable is manipulated. Also referred to as the predictor variable
Independent variable
This variable is measured. Also refereed to as the criterion variable
Dependent variable
Any variable that an experimenter purposefully holds constant.
Control variable
The levels of an independent variable
Conditions
A level of an IV that is intended to represent “no treatment” or neutral condition
Control group
The other level(s) of an IV other than the control group
Treatment group
When the kinds of participants in one level of the IV are systematically different from those in the other
Selection effects
Placing participants into control and experimental groups at random
Random assignment
These designs are different groups of participants are placed into different levels of the IV
Independent group designs
This designs occurs when there is only one group of participants, each person is presented with all levels of the IV
Within-groups design
This design occurs when participants are measured on a DV more than once, after exposure to each level of the IV
Repeated measures design
This design occurs when participants are randomly assigned to at least two different groups and are tested on the key DV twice
Pretest / post-test design
