CH 1 : Vine Anatomy and Propogation Flashcards
What is the difference between main shoots and lateral shoots?
The lateral shoots grow from buds formed in the present year
Main shoots emerge from the last seasons buds
What is the difference between compound and prompt buds?
Compound buds form in one growing season and break open in the next
Prompt buds form and develop within the same season, forming on the primary shoot
What is the function of Leaves
- to provide shade
- site of photosynthesis
- transpiration
- water conservation/management
What are the main grape species
Europe - vitis vinifera
America - v.labrusca, v. riparia, v. berlandieri, v. rupetris
What influence will the density of the grape bunches have on the vine?
more dense varieties like Pinot noir will be vulnerable to fungal diseases due to the lack of airflow and humid microclimate within the bunches
what is the name of the waxy coating on the grape? what is it’s function?
Bloom.
It houses ambient yeasts
What is one year old wood?
shoots from the previous season that have lignified.
Canes and spurs are types of one year old wood.
what are cordons?
arms of permanent wood, as see in guyot training
what is the function of the trunk/cordons?
structure
nutrient/carbohydrate storage
water/solute transport
The function of the roots
- stability
- nutrient and water uptake
- carbohydrate storage
- hormone development and signalling
What are clones?
vines that have mutated to develop certain characteristics. Desirable characteristics are propagated within a vineyard or nursery (clonal selection)
What is Massal Selection?
vineyards cultivate high-performing cuttings from their land, grafting where necessary, to produce new vine material.
it creates more genetic diversity, but can spread disease if the parent plant is affected.
Why are new grape varieties created
- environmental resistance
- yield (economics)
