Ch 1 sec 4 Flashcards
define periodontium
is the supporting tissues of the teeth in the mouth, including surrounding alveolar bone, the gingiva, the periodontal ligament, and out cementum layer of tooth roots
What is alveolar bone?
The portion of the upper (maxillary) and lower (mandibular) bones that surrounds the roots of the teeth
What is the gingiva?
part of the soft tissue in the mouth that covers the alveolar bone of the jaws. is the ONLY part of periodontium visible in a healthy mouth
what is the ONLY part of periodontium visible in a healthy mouth?
gingiva
attached gingiva is what?
the part of the gingiva that is attached to the underlying alveolar bone
free giniva is also called?
marginal gingiva
What is free gingiva?
thin, surrounds each tooth, provides access into soace between the free gingiva and tooth
What is the space between the free gingiva and tooth called?
gingival sulcus or crevice
What is the gingival margin?
the edge of the gingiva closest to the biting or chewing surfaces of the teeth
How can the gingival sulcus be evaluated?
with a periodontal probe
How far should a periodontal probe extend into the gingiva sulcus in a healthy person?
1-3 mm
interdental (interproximal) papilla is what and where?
is the part of the collar of free gingiva around the tooth the extends between two teeth
Why must a person curve the floss while flossing?
to avoid cutting the interdental papilla
define periodontal ligament?
very thin, connects a tooth to its surrounding bone aka connects the cementum to the alveolar bone
difference between clinical and anatomical crown and root?
anatomical is in the mouth or handheld, clinical is the amount of tooth visible in the oral cavity
