Nomad
A person who travels from place to place.
Why did nomads travel?
They would eat all the food in one place.
What kind of houses did the nomads live in?
Tents for warm weather. Caves for cold weather.
What sort of food did the nomads eat?
Nuts, berries, roots, lizards. The men would hunt bigger animals like deer or fish.
What is the fertile crescent?
An area in the desert by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers where the soil was fertile and grew many plants.
What shape was the fertile crescent?
Shaped like a sliver of the moon.
What did the nomads in the fertile crescent do after they ate all the food?
They started planting grains and became farmers.
How did the farmers make sure they had enough water for their crops?
They dug canals so the river water would flow towards their crops. They used a shaduf to move water from the canals to their crops.
Shaduf
A machine that the first farmers used to move water. It was a long pole balanced atop a pillar. One end had a leather bucket for gathering water. The other end had a large rock to make pulling the water up easier.
What type of houses did the farmers start building now that they were not nomads anymore?
They built permanent houses out of reeds or mud bricks.
How were the first villages started?
The farmers would build their houses close together so they could all help each other take care of their crops or animals.
How did the first cities begin?
The farmers became wealthy by trading their goods. They built walls around their villages to keep robbers out.
