ch 1 major body regions Flashcards
the body is divided into 2 major regions
axial and appendicular regions
axial region
- head
- neck
- trunk
appendicular region
- shoulder
- hips
- upper and lower limbs
major body regions: quadrants & regions
the trunk of the axial region can be further divided into the
thoracic region and abdominal region
major body regions: quadrants & regions
4 abdominopelvic quadrants
- right upper quadrant (RUQ)
- right lower quadrant (RLQ)
- left upper quadrant (LUQ)
- left lower quadrant (LLQ)
major body regions: quadrants & regions
9 abdominopelvic regions
- left hypochondriac region
- left lumbar region
- left inguinal region
- epigastric region
- umbilical region
- hypogastric region
- right hypochondriac region
- right lumbar region
- right inguinal region
body cavities & membranes
the body wall enclose multiple
BODY CAVITIES each lined with a membrane and containing internal organs called VISCERAL
body cavities & membranes
some of these membranes are two layered
- one layer against the surface of the organ (VISCERAL LAYER)
- the other lining the cavity (PARIETAL LAYER)
body cavities & membranes
body cavities are
- fluid filled and protect internal organs from shocks and impacts and allow for changes in size and shape of internal organs
- an example is a stomach expands when you eat
body cavities & membranes
cranial cavity
- associated viscera: brain
- membranous lining: meninges
body cavities and membranes
vertebral cavity
- associated viscera: spinal cord

thoracic cavity
pleural cavities (2)
- associated viscera: lungs
- membranous lining: pleurae

thoracic cavity
pericardial cavity
- associated viscera: heart
- membranous lining: pericardium
body cavities and membranes
abdominopelvic cavity
abdominal cavity
- associated viscera: digestive organs, spleen, kidneys
- membranous lining: peritoneum

abdominopelvic cavity
pelvic cavity
- associated viscera: bladder, rectum, reproductive organs
- membranous lining: peritoneum
