Ch 1: Developmental Word Knowledge Flashcards
Orthography
Is the knowledge of spelling
Layers of understanding
Alphabetic layer
Pattern layer
Meaning layer
Alphabetic layer
Uses the alphabet literally similar to old English spelling
Pattern layer
Pattern guides the grouping of letters caused by French influence
Meaning layer
This stage students are less confused because they relate the word to the meaning
Morphemes
Smallest unit of meaning in a language
Orthographic knowledge
Understanding the ways in which letters and letter patterns in words represent sounds and meanings
Instructional level
Which is the info meets the needs of the children
Zone of proximal development (ZPD)
Is when students are instructed during the zone of understanding
- what they can do independently and what they can do with help
Stages of spelling development
Emergent, letter name alphabetic, within word pattern, syllables and affixes, and derivational relations
Emergent stage- spelling
Is the writing of someone who has not read yet. This is prephonetic which means it has no direct relationship
Letter name alphabetic stage - spelling
This is when kids are first formally taught to read. They learn phonemes
Within word pattern stage - spelling
These kids spell many words correctly because of knowledge and short vowel patterns. This typically begins when they begin to read independently.
Ambiguous vowels
Vowels that are not long or short
Homophones
Words that sound the same but are spelled differently
Syllables and affixes stage - spelling
This stage is when kids are expected to spell many words with more than one syllable
Derivational relations stage - spelling
This is the final stage. In this stage the students examine how words can be derived from base words and roots. This is generative because the more they explore the more they generate.
Synchrony of literacy development
Is the harmony in the timing and development of reading, writing, and spelling development
Emergent readers
Are earnest about thier efforts but parents often see as pretend
Beginning readers
Have concepts of words and can accurately distinguish words in a familiar text
Transitional readers
Readers that become fluency because they can see words at first sight
Intermediate/advanced readers
Are when students become flexible and adult readers
Fundamental tenets of words their way
- Students learn phonics, spelling, and vocabulary based on developmental level
- Students learning is based on how they naturally are inclined to learn
