Ch. 1 Flashcards
Oceanographers
Those individuals who study the world ocean
Oceanography
The discipline of studying the world ocean
World Ocean
For oceanographers, there is only one ocean, divided into 5 major regions.
5 major regions of the ocean:
- Atlantic
- Pacific
- Indian
- Arctic
- Southern
4 major disciplines
Geological oceanography
Physical oceanography
Chemical oceanography
Biological oceanography
Geological oceanography
The study of ocean basins and the structures and features within them
Physical oceanography
The study of waves and tides, the circulation of the world ocean, and other physical processes
Chemical oceanography
The study of the chemical constituents that make up the world ocean and their sources, sinks, and transformations
Biological oceanography
The study of living systems and how they respond to changes in the geological, physical, and chemical environment
Why is oceanography called an interdisciplinary science?
Because any number of scientists from a wide variety of scientific disciplines may work together to research a particular oceanographic problem
Scientific inquiry
Making observations, formulating hypothesis, and conducting experiments
Activity model of the Scientific Method
A model of the scientific method characterized by multiple scientific activities and interactions among scientists
