Where do drugs come from?
Materia Medica
Botanical, Animal, Biological, Minerals, Synthetic
Pharmacotherapeutics means:
Field of medicine that studies drug in treatment of a disease
Pharmacokinetics means:
Study of drug how it moves in the body
Ex; absorption distribution, excretion, biotransformation
In Canada how are drugs regulated?
Health Canada
Pharmacovigilance means:
Monitoring drugs while in use
(Watching for adverse reactions )
Why is antimicrobial resistance a veterinary issue?
Emerging global health issue
What is an emergency drug release?
Vet request to use unapproved drug to treat a patient with serious life threatening issues
Why is extra-label use so common in veterinary medicine?
Medications being used for other purposes than what is labelled. This happens commonly in vet med because we may need to use human meds, compound meds, etc.
What does drug residue mean?
Presence of pharmacologically active substances and/or their metabolites in foodstuffs obtained from animals
Explain the difference between OTC and prescription drugs. Give examples.
OTC- no need for vet/physician to see patient prior, you can go buy it off the shelves
-- Aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, Advantage II
Prescription drugs – a VCPR is needed in order to get these medications
What is a VPCR? Why is this so important?
veterinarian, client & patient relationship. It is legally required in many jurisdictions in order to ensure that animals receive the best possible, informed care
What is a controlled drug? Give an example.
A drug that poses a high right of human abuse/misuse
Examples: buprenorphine, diazepam, pentobarbital
