CGP 4 Flashcards
Conditions of a high pressure belt? why?
- clear skies
- no rainfall
because it has descending air which dries and clears clouds.
Conditions of low pressure belt
- cloudy
- high rainfall
because it has rising air, forming clouds.
what is the process of atmospheric circulation that trasnfers heat from the equator to the poles?
Heat energy by convection of Hadley cells, warm air rises at the equator, moves poleward and sinks at 30 degrees, transferring heat. Process continues through ferrel and polar cells.
Thermohaline circulation
Circulation of water driven by water temperature and salinity.
How are ocean currents created by changes to water density at the poles? What do the currents do?
Cold, salty water sinks, starting deep ocean currents, by thermohaline circulation. The currents transfer heat energy by moving cold water toward equator and warm water toward the poles.
