Cervical Technologies Flashcards
What is Cervical Disk Replacement?
The Cervical disks are the cushions between your cervical vertebrae. When the space between the vertebrae become too narrow, they can press on your spinal cord and nerves. This cause numbness and pain. CDR involves removing this disk and replacing it with an artificial one. Before this was available, it was common the disks were fused.
How do Spinal Cages Work?
It is designed as a cages so that a bone graft can be placed inside the hollow cylinder to allow spinal fusion to occur between two vertebrae. The holes in the cage allow the bone to grow through and around the cage connecting them into solid bone.
What is Anterior Plating?
Anterior plating is a support system used on the anterior (front) side that reduces movement between the graft and vertebral body to optimise biochemical interacton and fusion.
In anterior cervical discectomies, It has been shown that AP has helped single spinal fusion allograft increase success rate from 90 to 96%, and two level spinal fusion from 72 to 91%.
What is PEEK material?
PEEK material (polyetheretherketone) is a high-performance semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastic
What is Ardrodesis
The surgical immobilization of a joint so that the bones grow solidly together.
What are cervical posterior screw fixation systems?
Posterior cervical spine fixation is a key component in posterior cervical arthrodesis (fusion of two segments or more) which is commonly performed to treat various degenerative, neoplastic, inflammatory and traumatic conditions affecting the cervical spine. The cervical spine is highly mobile and is composed of seven vertebrae.
