When is cervical screening offered
3 yearly age 25-49
5 yearly age 50-65
In what circumstances should smear tests be delayed
Menstruating Less than 12 weeks post-partum Less than 12 weeks post TOP/miscarriage Current vaginal or pelvic infection Pregnant
How long before a smear should women avoid using vaginal medications/lubricants/creams
2 days
If a smear result comes back as ‘inadequate’ what do you do
Repeat in 3 months time
If a smear result comes back as borderline or low grade dyskaryosis what do you do
Test is for HPV
If a bordeline or low grade smear comes back positive for HPV what do you do
Send for colposcopy in 6 weeks
If a borderline or low grade smear comes back negative for HPV what do you do
Return to routine screening
If a smear comes back as moderate or high grade dyskaryosis what do you do
2 week wait colposcopy
What are the risks of a smear test
Light spotting/bleeding
May end up treating cells that would have returned to normal on their own
Risks of treatment - bleeding, infection, cervical incompetence
What does CIN stand for
Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
What does CIN1 mean
1/3 thickness affected
What does CIN2 mean
2/3 thickness affected
What does CIN3 mean
Full thickness affected
If a colposcopy biopsy comes back CIN1 what happens
No treatment
Smear in 1 year
If a colposcopy biopsy comes back CIN2 or CIN3 what happens
Treatment - LLETZ or cone biopsy
