What is used to screen for cancer?
LBC - liquid-based cytology

25-49 - 3 yrs
50-64 - 5 yrs
Procedure - just run through it
- Speculum to visualise cervix
- Brush on small broom is inserted and sweeps in cervical os
- Brush withdrawn and head detached into the fluid vial
Results and management:
What is done if it normal?
What is done if it is an inadequate sample?
Routine recall
Repeat ASAP
Abnormal results - further testing:
For low-grade squamous dyskaryosis
HPV triage by testing the original sample
If HPV +ve then refer for colposcopy and punch biopsy within 4 wks
If HPV -ve then return to routine recall
Abnormal results - further testing:
For high-grade squamous dyskaryosis
Colposcopy with punch biopsy
Treat immediately if visual appearance confirms high-grade dyskaryosis
Abnormal results - further testing:
For suspected invasive carcinoma or cervical glandular intra-epithelial neoplasia (CGIN)
Urgent colposcopy
