Cerebrovascular Anatomy Flashcards
What is known as painless temporary loss of vision in one or both eyes?
Amaurosis fugax
What are the principal arteries supplying the head and neck?
Common carotid arteries
Where does the RCCA originate?
Brachiocephalic trunk
Where does the LCCA originate?
2nd branch off the aortic arch
At the level of what vertebrae does the CCA bifurcate into the internal and external carotid arteries?
C4 - same level as the superior border of the thyroid cartilage
Is the ECA or ICA larger?
ICA
Blood from the ICA is responsible for supplying what structures?
Brain and eyes
How would you tell apart the ICA and ECA?
- ICA is larger and has a bulb at the bifurcation from the CCA
- The ICA has NO branches off of it
What are the 3 main segments of the ICA?
- Cervical
- Petrous
- Intracranial
What artery is the first major branch of the intracranial segment of the ICA?
Ophthalmic artery
The ECA supplies blood flow to what structures?
Face and neck
What is the first branch off the ECA?
Superficial temporal artery
What are the anterior branches off the ECA?
- Superior thyroid
- Lingual
- Facial
What are the posterior branches off the ECA?
- Ascending pharyngeal
- Occipital
- Posterior auricular
ECA terminates into what two arteries?
- Superficial temporal
- Internal maxillary
