CVA( stroke)
Injury to the brain caused by impaired blood supply. Over 65/ Men more.
Risk factors of CVA:
Age, fam history, diabetes, obesity, smoking, heart disease.
symptoms of Acute:
weakness, loss of speech, dizziness, headaches.
(DVT) Deep Vein Thrombosis

ministroke. temporary attack, reversible.
Symptoms of a TIA:
weakness on one side of body, speech problems, coordination problems.
Stroke in Evolution (SIE):
gradual weakness one side of body. leading to complete stroke.
complete stroke
severe damage from interrupted blood flow to brain.
Spinal Cord Tracts
Sensory info relayed along tracts. these tracts cross to other side of body. (hemipariesis–> loss of motor or sensory on contralateral side)
Corticospinal Tract
Major efferent (motor) tract controls muscles on cont. side of body.
Spinothalamic Tract.
Major afferent (sensory) tract relays hot/cold, sensation, pain, touch.
left hemisphere controls:
speech (analytical)
right hemisphere controls:
spatial interpretation (artistic)
receptive aphasia
inability to understand written language
Expressive aphasia
understands language but unable to speak
