Cerebral palsy Flashcards
Dyskinetic cerebral palsy
3 types
lesion in basal ganglia-which means fluctuations in muscle tone
dystonia- excessive or inadequate muscle tone repetitive, distorted, twisted movements
athetosis- writhing involuntary movements more distal than proximal
chorea- spasmodic involuntary movements which are more proximal than distal and a lack of co-contractions
Ataxic cerebral Palsy
ataxia?
lesion in cerebellum which means lack of stability co-activation is difficult resulting in more primitive total patterns of movement
classification is according to levels of severity
ataxia describes a lack of coordination while performing task
Gross motor (MACS) I
walks without restrictions; limitations in more advanced gross motor skill
Gross motor (MACS) II
walks without assistive devices; limitations walking outdoors and in the community
Gross motor (MACS) III
walks with assistive devices; limitations walking outdoors and in the community
Gross motor (MACS) IV
self-mobility with limitations; children are transported or use power mobility outdoor and in the community
Gross motor (MACS) V
self-mobility is severely limited, even with the use of assistive technology
Manual ability (MACS) I
Handles objects easily and successfully
Manual ability (MACS) II
Handles most objects but with somewhat reduced quality or speed of achievement
Manual ability (MACS) III
Handles objects with difficulty; needs help to prepare or modify activities
Manual ability (MACS) IV
handles a limited selection of easily managed objects in adapted situations
Manual ability (MACS) V
Does not handle objects and has severely limited ability to perform even simple actions
Spastic cerebral palsy
3 types
Positive sign?
-most common type
Affected areas of the body.
- Spastic diplegia – legs affected more than arms
- Spastic quadriplegia – all limbs, trunk, muscles to mouth, tongue and pharynx are involved
- Spastic hemiplegia – one side of the body is more involved than the other, arm is more involved than the leg
dyspraxia
-is a condition affecting physical co-ordination that causes a child to perform less well than expected for his or her age in daily activities and appear to move clumsily.
