Cerebral inflammation Flashcards
Define meningitis
-Inflammation of the meninges caused by viral or bacterial infection
-Usually subarachnoid
Define encephalitis
-Inflammation of the brain caused by infection or autoimmune mechanisms
Define cerebral vasculitis
-Inflammation of blood vessel walls (angitis)
Define myelitis
-Inflammation of the spinal cord
What are some of the symptoms of encephalitis?
-Initially flue like with pyrexia and headache
What are the most common causes of encephalitis?
Viral infections
-Herpes simplex
-Measles
-Varicella
-Rubella
What is multiple sclerosis?
An autoimmune condition causing demyelination of the CNS
What is the progression of MS linked to?
Neuron degeneration
What do we see at a cellular level in multiple sclerosis?
Perivascular Immune cell infiltration (CD3 T cells and CD20 B Cells) aka perivascular cuffing.
Summarise the main 4 pathophysiological traits of MS.
-Inflammation
-Demyelination
-Axonal loss
-Neurodegeneration
