Cerebral Dominance Flashcards
The hemisphere responsible for logical, analytic & verbal tasks is called……, while that resp for musical & artistic talents is called……
Categorical
Representational
Lesion of representational hemisphere leads to……
Agnosia & contralateral neglect
Mention functions of parieto-occipito-temporal association areas
- Analysis of spatial coordinates of the body (amorphosynthesis)
- Area for language comprehension (Wernicke)
- Area for interpretation of visual language reading, angular gyrus
- Area for naming objects between temporal & occipital lobes
Mention functions of prefrontal association area
Planning voluntary activity, creativity, decision making, personality traits, elaboration of thoughts, organize events in time, solving complex problems, site of operation of working memory, plans motor patterns of speech (Brocca’s), shares in control of emotional behaviour.
Describe lesion of prefrontal cortex
Lack of initiation & self control, inability to solve complex problems, or to strong sequential tasks or to do parallel tasks, difficulty in attention, loack of temoral order & recent memory. Disorder in personality & social behaviour, person becomes impulsive & aggressive.
Functions of Wernicke’s area
- Comprehension of thoughts of visual & auditory information
- Determination of thoughts to be expressed
- Choice of proper words to be used
Describe S&F of Broca’s area
S, frontal lobe in lower part of premotor area
F, formation of words, stores programs of the spoken words=sequence of coordinated contractions of lips, tongue & laryngeal muscles. Send this via speech articulation area in insula to motor cortex then to corticobulbar tract which initiates contractions
Describe S&F of Exner’s area
S, upper part of premotor area
F, stores programs of written words=sequence of coordinated contractions of harnd muscles operates via corticospinal tract
Mention types of sensory aphasia
Visual, auditory, Wernicke’s
GR: Occurrence of conductive aphasia
Due to lesion of arcuate fasciculus but now appears to be due to lesions near auditory cortex.
Picture of anomic aphasia & lesion
Patient can’t name seen objects, has difficulty to understand written words and pictures
Angular gyrus damage thus visual info is not processed & transmitted to Wernicke’s area
Agraphia occurs with…..lesion
Exner’s area of hand skills
Enumerate types of dysarthria
- Spastic (UMNL)
- Flaccid (LMNL)
- Ataxic (neocerebellar lesion)
- Hypokinetic (Parkinson)
- Hyperkinetic (Basal ganglia lesion)
- Mixed
