Cerebellum Flashcards
what is the function of the cerebellum?
it micromanages the cortex
the cerebellum intefrates the sensory and motor systems to influence what? (6)
balance and equilibrium muscle tone postural reflexes co-ordination fine motor control intrinsic motor learning
what are the 3 lobes of the cerebellum?
anterior lobe, posterior lobe, flocculonodular lobe
what are the 3 functional divisions of the cerebellum?
Vestibulocerebellum
spinocerebellum
cerebrocerebellum
what is the vestibulocerebellum responsible for?
postural responses to vestibular input (oldest pathway)
what is the spinocerebellum responsible for?
muscle tone and postural control of limbs- more advanced postural calculations
what is the cerebrocerebellum responsible for?
coordination of voluntary movements- (newest pathway)
What are the 4 cerebellar deep nuclei?
Dentate, Emboliform, Globose, Fastigial
info from the vestibulocerebellar loop synapses on which deep cerebellar nuclei?
fastigial
info from the spinocerebellar loop synapses on which cerebellar deep nuclei
emboliform, globose, fastigial
info from the cerebrocerebellar loop synapses on which nuclei?
dentate
damage to the flocculonodular lobe creates which type of ataxia?
it affects the vestibulocerebellar loop
Truncal ataxia
What are the symptoms of truncal ataxia?
loss of equilibrium (inability to stand)
staggering, wide base gait in an attempt to try to compensate for the lack of stability
also decreased stability while seated
is there tremor in someone with truncal ataxia?
no
what are reflexes and muscle tone like in someone with truncal ataxia?
normal
can a patient with truncal ataxia do lower limb coordination testing?
Yes- heel to shin test
a medulloblastoma affects where and most likely creates what type of ataxia?
tumor between the medulla and the cerebellum in the 4th ventricle
flocculonodular lobe- truncal ataxia
what cerebellar condition is caused by chronic alcoholism?
anterior lobe syndrome
what is anterior lobe syndrome?
degeneration of the cerebellar cortex starting at anterior end, bilaterally
affects the spinocerebellar loop
what are the main symptoms of anterior lobe syndrome
affects the legs- so incoordination of the leg movements- broad based staggering gait
can a patient with anterior lobe syndrom do lower limb coordination testing? (eg heel to shin test)
no- also cannot do heel-toe walk
what is the condition that causes progressive degeneration of the proprioceptive pathways?
Friedrich Ataxia- its genetic
also degeneration of the corticospinal pathway
cerebrocerebellum syndrome occurs when there is damage where?
to the lateral posterior lobe
true or false, in cerebrocerebellar syndrom you get increased tone and increased reflexivity?
false- you see hypotonia and hyporeflexia
what are some of the symptoms of cerebrocerebellar syndrome? (6)
dysmetria, dysarthria, dysdiadochokinesia (anything with speed), movement initiation is harder, intention tremor, issues stopping movements or changing directions
