Ceramics and composites Flashcards
What is ceramic?
Inorganic material
normally an oxide , nitride or carbide of metal
Example use of ceramic material
- Tools for grinding and cutting
- Refractory tiles used to insulate furnaces
- Electrical insulators
- lenses
- building materials
Properties of ceramic materials
- Good insulators to heat and electricity
- Difficult to machine due to hardness and breaking
What is composite?
Material that is made from two or more materials types that are not chemically joined
Benefits of composite materials
- Create materials with unique combinations
- Lightweight
Disadvantages of composite materials
- Most composite materials cannot be recycled
- Difficult to separate materials
Examples of composite materials
- Reinforced concrete
- Fibreglass
- Carbon-reinforced plastics
- Metal matrix composites
Properties of reinforced concetre
Increased strength under tension
What do fibreglass use?
Thin fibres of ceramic glass stuck together with polyester or epoxy resin
Properties of fibre glass
Strong material and formed into complex shape
Properties of carbon-reinforced pladtic
Products more stronger than fibreglass
What products are made from carbon-reinforced platic?
Racing car bodies
Helmets
bulletproof vests
