What are ceramics made from?
Clay

Malleable when moist, hardened by firing
Types and properties of clay:
Earthenware - cheap, low firing temp, tiling
Stoneware - high quality, table wear
China - hard, makes porcelain
St Thomas - sculptures, can be spun on potters wheel
How is clay used to make ceramics?
Shaping body clay on a potters wheel
Body clay
Moist and unhardened
What does firing do to clay?
Fuses the clay together and removes moisture (hardens)
Glazing
Seals the surface to give an attractive finish. A coat is applied and then fired
Non clay ceramics
Plaster of Paris - soft, sculptures
Concrete - made from cement, used for building structures
Glass - melted sand & minerals, Windows
Properties of ceramics
Resist high temps
Good insulators
Don’t rust
