What are the indications of cephalosporins?

A

Don’t treat CNS infections except meningitis
- UTI
- RTI
- Serious infections

Give examples of cephalosporins

A

1st gen:
- Cefalexin
- Cefadroxil (BD)

2nd gen:
- Cefaclor (protracted skin reactions)
- Cefuroxime (take after food)

3rd gen:
- Cefixime (orally active)
- Ceftriaxone

What are the side effects of cephalosporins?

A

Abx associated colitis (3rd + 4th gen)

Cross sensitivity in penicillin allergy
- Immediate hypersensitivity → if essential: 3rd gen OR cefuroxime

INC nephrotoxicity
- Aminoglycosides, ciclosporins, methotrexate, NSAIDs
Warfarin → bleed
