What does central venous pressure (CVP) measure?
CVP- is a measure of pressure in the vena cava and can be used as an estimate of preload and atrial pressure.
What is the role of the bedside nurse during the insertion of the CVC?
- support the proceduralist
- inform pt of procedure
- connect pt to cardiac monitor
- clip hair around site if required
- transcribe external length in care plan and in integrated notes as well as the dressing sticker.
Outline some of the most common complications related to CVC insertion?
- infection (local/bloodstream)
- myocardial infection
- thrombosis
- air embolism
- guidewire embolism
- catheter breakage
- neurological injury
How often is a CVC dressing changed?
every 7 days
what solution do we use to clean CVC sites when changing dressing or removing CVC?
-Chlorhexidine soaked gauze
does the hub of the CVC need to be covered with the occlusive dressing?
Yes
According to the central line insertion and management CPS, what position must a pt be in for removal of a CVC or vascath?
-Always remove CVC whilst the patient is lying supine/flat with the exit site below the heart to reduce the risk of air embolus
