CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM THE CEREBRAL CORTEX & HOMUNCULUS Flashcards
How many lobes of the brain are there and what are their names?
4..
Frontal, Parietal, Occipital, Temporal
What is a Gyrus/ Gyri?
Ridge on the cerebral cortex of the brain. (part that sticks out, like a mountain)
What is a sulcus/ sulci?
Small grooves that surrounds a gyrus (the part that goes inward, a valley)
What is the purpose of gyri and sulci?
The more folds the more surface area which makes more connections (allows more space for more neurons)
What is a fissures?
Large grooves that separate lobes (the central sulcus is actually a fissure)
Main sense associated with the temporal lobe?
Language processing (on the left side)
Main sense associated with the occipital lobe?
vision
Main sense associated with the Parietal lobe?
sensory
Main sense associated with the frontal lobe?
motor
what is the difference between a primary cortex and an association cortex?
primary- basic motor or sensory function
Association- more complex processing and functions (planning)
what is information cross over?
when your body sense something on the right side of the body it is processed on the left side of the brain
