CELLULAR RESPIRATION Flashcards
The process of releasing the energy stored in food
cellular respiration
takes place in all living cells and makes adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP)
cellular respiration
begins in the cytosol
glycolysis phase
progresses onto the mitochondrion where the rest of the phases occur, namely:
acetyl coA formation, Krebs cycle and electron transport chain.
The complete process takes place only in the presence of oxygen, and is described as
aerobic respiration
absence of oxygen, cells undergo
makes little or no ATP
fermentation or anaerobic respiration
not the same as breathing and is a chemical process
Respiration
a mechanical process in which there is an exchange of gases, usually carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2)
Breathing
Gas Evolved in Aerobic Respiration
40% KOH in flask 1A and fill flask 1B with germinating mongo
50 ml Ba(OH)2
equation in BaOH and CO2
CO2 + Ba(OH)2 -> BaCO3 + 2H2O
Effect of Substrate on Fermentation
fermentation tubes
Browning and dis-coloration of cut or bruised fruit or vegetables such as apples, peaches or potatoes are often caused
are catalyzed by oxidases
oxidations
acting on naturally occurring peroxidases
peroxidase

Place 3 freshly prepared cylinders in tube A. Immerse the 3 remaining cylinders for 3 minutes in hot water and place these in tube B.

Guaiacol Peroxidase
Breaks down H2O2
into water and gas
Catalase
hydrogrn peroxide breakdown
2H2O2 → 2H2O + O2
