Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Glycolysis
Glucose is partially broken down and a modest amount of energy is released.
Link Step
Pyruvate is converted to Acetyl-CoA and CO2
Krebs Cycle
Acetyl-CoA is broken down, forms energy carriers
Electron Transport Chain
Electron carriers release high energy e- to the ETC to make ATP.
Glucose is…
Oxidized
O2 is….
Reduced
Some bacteria run the Krebs cycle in reverse
Generation of organic molecules, pyruvate can be modified to form alanine. Acetyl-CoA cna make acetate, that is the staring point for lipid synthesis
Net Gain of Glycolysis
2 ATP and 2 NADH
Total Products of Krebs cycle
2 ATP, 6 NADH, and 2 FADH2 per molecule of glucose.
Complete Oxidation of glucose makes
32 molecules of ATP
Lactic Acid Fermentation
Does not require oxygen, pyruvate will enter this cycle instead of the Krebs. pH in muscles decreases when lactic acid builds up.
Alcohol fermentation
Occurs in plants and fungi in the absence of oxygen.
Glycogen
Large branched glucose chains attach to central protein (liver). Can be used during glucose deprivation
B-oxidation
Fatty Acids are cut up into 2C fragments and feeds intot he Acetyl-CoA step.
