Cellular Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
cellular respiration
A
- cell get energy w breakdown of glucose
- C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
= glucose + o2 = co2 +water + energy
2
Q
1st step in cellular respiration
A
- breakdown of glucose (glycolysis)
- conversion of glucose -> pyruvate
- net total: 2 ATP, 2 pyruvate, 2 NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)
3
Q
2nd step in cellular respiration
A
- Krebs cycle or citric acid cycle
- aerobic (need oxygen)
- pyruvate -> mitochondrion
- net total: 2 ATP, 6CO2, 6NADH, 1 FADH2
4
Q
3rd step in cellular respiration
A
- electron transport chain
- aerobic
- oxidation of NADH -> oxygen + water
- net total: ATP = 32-26 each glucose consumed
5
Q
what is fermentation?
A
- when no oxygen exists
- produce alcohol, lactic acid
- release CO2
6
Q
where does cellular respiration take place?
A
- mitochondria
