Cellular Respiration
The series of chemical reaction that releases energy from carbohydrates in the presence of oxygen (while building ATP)
Aerobic
Chemical reaction that requieres oxygen
Anaerobic
Chemical reactions that do not require oxygen
Photosynthesis
The conversion of light energy into chemical energy, specifically carbohydrates
Glycolysis
The first phase of CR where glucose is broken down in a series of reaction creating NADH, purvic acid, and 2 ATP (and water)
Krebs cycle
The second phase of CR where pyrvic acid is broken down into carbon dioxide in series of chemical reactions creating NADH , FADH2m and 2 ATP (and carbon dioxide)
electron transport chain
The third phase of CR that uses the high-energy electrons and hydrogen ions from glycolysis and the Krebs cycle to create up to 32 ATP molecules (and carbon dioxide)
ATP
Teh main energy source that cells use for most of their work, also known at adenosine triphosphate
ADP
The chemical compound that can be turned back into ATP by adding a third phosphate group, aka adenosine diphosphate
Lactic acid fermentation
A series of chemical reactions that are caused due to a lack of oxygen and result in lactase and 2 ATP (but no other products useful for CR)
FADH2
The electron carrier only created in Krebs cycle while can carry 2 hydrogen ions and high energy electrons, also called flavin adenine dinucleotide
NADH
the electron carrier created in both glycolysis and the Krebs cycle used in the electron transport chain - nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide
ATP synthesis
Large protein that uses energy from H+ ions to bind ADO and a phosphate group together to produce ATP
carbon dioxide
the waste product that is produced during the Krebs cycle
water
the waste product of the electron transport chain and glycolysis
Carbohydrate
The molecule that is used during CR to power the process of turning ADP back into ATP
Oxygen
This molecule is used in the Electron Transport Chain, and if not present the buildup of NADH will cause fermentation to occur.
