Cellular adaptations (1) Flashcards
Define Etiology
underlying causes & factors of disease (can be genetic or acquired)
what tissues undergo hypertrophy only?
Cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle, and nerve
What is hypertrophy?
increase in cell size
what is hyperplasia?
increase is cell number
Atrophy>?
A reduction is cell/organ size
what mechanism is used in the decrease of cell number (Atrophy)?
Apoptosis
what is the difference between metaplasia and dysplasia?
Metaplasia: Transforms a cell from mature cell type to another mature; caused by external stimulus; can be reversible; less likely to lead to cancer. Dysplasia: Transforms a cell into an abnormal version of itself; caused by internal stimulus; is not reversible; more likely to lead to cancer.
