Cells, Tissues, And Organs Flashcards
Outline the lymphatic system and its function.
Lymphatic System; drains fluid called lymph(not pressured).
Lymph(a clear white fluid of lymphocytes) is collected from the tissues and into lymphatic vessels, passing through lymph nodes and returns to blood.
Outline/describe the 2 main groups of organs with respect to the lymphatic system.
- The Primary Lymphoid Organs; development and maturation of immune cells(e.g. lymphcytes) in the bone marrow and thymus.
- The Secondary Lymphoid Organs; traps antigens and lymphocytes interact with antigens, these organs include lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, MALT, GALT.
**Blood vessels and lymphatic systems connect these organs.*
Annotate/label the human lymphoid system, whilst describing specific functions.
- Primary lymphoid organs (bone marrow and thymus) shown in red. Secondary lymphoid organs in blue.
- Lymphoid organs and tissues are interconnected by blood vessels (not shown) and lymphatic vessels, through which lymphocytes circulate. Only one bone is shown, but all major bones contain marrow and are thus part of the lymphoid system.
Where do b and t lymphocytes mature?
B in the bone marrow and T in the thymus.
Discuss/describe the thymus, structure, function, and immune relevance?
Discuss/describe the spleen, structure, function, and immune relevance?
Discuss/describe the lymphoid follicles, structure, function, and immune relevance?
