Cells & Tissues Flashcards
What is the function of cells?
Reproduction, Energy of Conversion, and Transport
What do glandular cells do?
Produce hormones and enzymes
What do adipose cells do?
Store fat
What do nerve and muscle cells do?
Conduct electrical impulses
What do bone and blood cells do
Connect body parts
What do cells begin as?
Pluripotent stem cells = can differentiate into any cell
What are the 3 layers in cells
Endodermal (inner) / Mesodermal (middle) / Ectodermal (outer)
What can endodermal cells differentiate to?
epithelial cells / trachea / bronchi / bladder / thyroid / parathyroid / intestines
What is the mesodermal layer
consist of muscle, bone, form cartilage, veins, arteries, lymphatic system, dermis
what is the ectodermal layer
skin, hair, lens, cornea, sebaceous glands, tooth enamel
What is epithelial tissue classified as
by cell shape: squamous, cuboidal, columnar, transitional
by arrangement: simple (single layer) / stratified (multiple layer)
what is the function of epithelial tissue
protection (skin)
absorption (stomach lining)
filtration (kidney)
secretion (glands)
what is connective tissue classified as
loose or dense
special connective tissue include: cartilage, bone, blood and lymph
function of connective tissue
protection (areolar) storage (adipose) connection (ligament) support (bone) transport (blood)
what is muscle tissue classified as
striated (cardiac or skeletal)
smooth (smooth muscle)
