cells organisation Flashcards
what are the levels of organisation
organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ system.
what does mitochondria do
it carries out respiration
what is a nucleus
contains genetic material in chromosomes
controls cell division
what does cytoplasm do
supports cell structures
stie of chemical reactions
cell membrane
holds cell together
controls substances entering leaving the cell
cell wall
give cell extra support and defines it shape
chloroplasts
site of photosynthesis
ribosomes
site of proteins production
vacuole
contains sap
used for storage of minerals
helps with cell shape
what are specialised cells
they have developed certain characteristics in order to perform particular functions
specialised cells include
nerve cells
ciliated cell
sperm cells
what are stem cells
their function is to divide and produce new differentiated cells within the tissue for growth and repair
what can scientist do with stem cells
they can direct them to differentiate into almost any cell type.
advantage of stem cells in medicine
it can be used to replace damaged cells, organs can be made from one persons stem cells
disadvantage of stem cells
mutations can occur in stem cells cultured for several generations
