biological molecules Flashcards
what is the in carbohydrates
carbon, hydrogen , oxygen
what are proteins made of
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen
what are lipids made of
cardon, oxygen, hydrogen
what are the different types of size of carbs
1 = glucose
2 = maltose
2< = starch or glycogen
what is the basic unit of proteins
amino acids
what happens when amino acids join together
a protein is formed
what is the different types of size of proteins
amino acids
peptide
protein
what are lipids made of
1 glycerol and 3 fatty acid chains
what are the two types of lipids
fats (room temp solid)
oils (room temp liquid)
how do you test for glucose
add benedict’s to solution to be tested
put in water bath
yellow if low
red for high
how do you test for starch
add iodine solution
substance turns blue-black
how do you test for protein
use biuret solution
positive turns purple
how do you test for lipids
add sample with 2cm of ethanol
the same amount of water is added
positive it will turn cloudy
what are enzymes
they are proteins
they are biological catalysts
they are specific to one particular substrate
how is the production of enzymes changed
temperature
pH
