cells & organelles Flashcards
What is prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells are single-celled organisms with no membrane-bound organelles. Eukaryotic cells are cells with membrane-bound organelles including a membrane-bound nucleus.
What is ultrastructure?
The things you can see under an elctron microscope.
What are 3 things that eukaryotic cells have but prokaryotic cells do not?
Eukaryotic cells have:
- distinct nucleus
- membrane-bound organelles
- lysosomes
What is the function of the following:
nucelus
nucelar envelope
nuclear pores
chromatin
nucleolus
nucleus- contains genetical material and controls the cells activity.
nuclear envelope - (double membrane) controls the entry and exit of maerials from the nucleolus.
nuclear pores- allows large molecules such as mRNA to exit the nucleolus.
chromatin - made up of proteins and DNA. Also controls the cell’s activity.
nucleolus - synthesises ribosomes.
What are 3 functions of the nucleus?
- produces mRNA for protein synthesis
- manufactures ribosomes
- retains genetic material in the form of DNA or chromosomes.
