cells functions Flashcards
chloroplasts
site of photosynthesis, light energy is trapped by the chlorophyl and used to produce carbohydrates
vacuole
maintains the turgor to ensure a rigid framework in the cell
tonoplast
selectively permeable to allow small molecules to pass through
amyloplast
enables transport and communication between individual plant cells
pits
allows water to enter and leave xylem cells
plasmodesmata
allows transport between cells
red blood cell
to transport oxygen around the body
root hair cell
allows the plant to absorb more water
white blood cells
kill pathogens (foreign bodies)
palisade mesophyll cell
maximise light absorption
egg cell
to become fertilised
sperm cell
deliver genetic info to the egg cell
cilliated epithelial cells
removes (wafts) mucus from the lungs before it can reach the lungs
goblet cells
traps bacteria and pathogens by creating mucus
plasmids
contains benifital genetic info, and allows genetic info to be transferred
Schwann cells
warps around the axon to create myelin sheath
nodes of ranvier
small gaps of exposed axon, important to speed up impulses
mitochondria
generates chemical energy needed for reactions
synapse
to connect neurone and help transmit info from one neutron to the next
synaptic cleft
to provide space for chemical transmissions of messages from the nervous system
nucleus
the repository of genetic info and as the cells control centre
cell wall
provides protection and form to the cell and its contents
cell membrane
regulates the transport of materials entering and exiting the cell
