Cells and Tissues Flashcards
What does simple squamous look like?
Very flat and thin
What does simple cubodial look like?
Tall, wide, thick, and cube like
What does simple columnar look like?
Not as wide, but very tall
What makes an osteocyte cell stand out?
Single cell with many branches around it
What does an adipocyte look like?
Round with a large sac inside
What does a nerve cell look like?
Branched cell with a tail
What does a skeletal muscle look like?
Long, stacked cylinders (twizzlers)
What does a cardiac muscle look like?
Separate cylinder shapes that resemble a ladder.
What does a smooth muscle cell look like?
Short and thin oval shaped cells stacked on top of one another
What is the function of a dendrite (branch)?
Receives messages from other nerves
What is the function of an axon?
Where messages travel away from the nerve
What is a synapse?
Where neurons connect/meet
What is a neurotransmitter?
Chemical messages that carry, boost, and balance signals between the neuron
What is included in the cell body?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm
What is a schwann cell?
Type of cells from PNS that help form myelin sheath around the nerve fibers
What are meninges?
3 thin layers of tissue that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord
Where is epithelial tissue located?
Almost everywhere, line body cavities, hollow organs
What are glands?
Produce and release substances that perform specific functions in the body
Function of exocrine gland
Discharge their products (sweat, saliva, tears, digestive juices)
Function of endocrine gland
Releases hormones into the bloodstream
What is matrix?
Something from which something else originates/develops
