Cells and their Requirements Flashcards
For cells to live they require
Energy (in the form of light of chem energy in complex molecules), matter (o2), simple nutrients/ ions, react to stimuli and removal of wastes
Photosynthesis
Captures light energy to produce a useable form of energy during cellular respiration
Respiration
conversion of energy from carbohydrates and fats into a form cells can use
Chemosynthesis
Small group of bacteria creates sugars from inorganic compounds without sun
Metabolism
Refers to chemical reactions that take place in a cell, the sum of chemical reactions.
Autotroph
Create their own organic substances they require from inorganic substances
Heterotrophs
Consume other organisms to gain nutrients
Assimilation
An organism incorporates nutrients from outside of the body into more complex substances
Absorption
Transport of nutrients into an organism
Asexual reproduction
Duplicate genetic material and then divide them equally before cell splits to form identical daughter cells
Sexual reprod
Produce specialised reproductive male and female cells that fuse to form another individual
Cell theory
All organisms are made of cells, cell is the basic unit of life, and cells come from pre-existing cells
