Cells and Cell Transport Flashcards
What is homeostasis
process by which living organisms maintain stable internal conditions despite external changes.
What chemical energy is used by cells in active transport
ATP
What is diffusion
The movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to low concentration
What is facilitated diffusion
The transport of substances across a biological membrane from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration through a channel
What is osmosis
The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane toward a higher concentration of solute.
What is passive transport
Type of membrane transport that does not require energy to move substances across cell membranes
What is active transport
The process of moving molecules across a cellular membrane through the use of cellular energy
Concentration gradient
When there’s a difference in concentration between two things
Semi permeable
Some things can pass through while others cannot
Hypertonic
More salute in the environment than there is in the cell, causing the cell to shrink.
Hypotonic
There is less salute in the environment than there is in the cell, causing the cell to swell
Isotonic
Same salute concentration in and outside of the cell
What types of organisms have prokaryotic cells and which have eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotic cells: bacteria and archaea
Eukaryotic cells: plants, animals, fungi
Does active transport require energy
Yes
Does passive transport require energy
No
