Cells Flashcards
What is the nucleus?
It controls the cell
What is the cell membrane?
It controls what enters and leaves
What is the cell wall?
It supports the cell and keeps it rigid
What is the cytoplasm?
It is watery jelly. Most of the cell’s activities happen here.
What are the differences between a plant and animal cell?
Plant : Vacuole , Cell wall , Chloroplast
What is the vacuole?
It is a large storage space filled with cell sap
What are the similarities between a plant and animal cell?
They both have a nucleus, cytoplasm, and a cell membrane
What is a specialised cell?
Specialised cells are specially designed to carry out a particular job
What is the function of the Sperm Cell - how is it different?
Function : To reach female egg cells and join with it.
Difference : It has a long tail for swimming and has a pointed head.
What is the function of the Egg / Ovum Cell - how is it different?
Function : To join with the male cell, the sperm cell. And also to be fertilised.
Difference : It contains lots of cytoplasm.
What is the function of the Ciliated Cell - how is it different?
Function : To push and move mucus from one place to another.
Difference : To sweep away the mucus. It has a thin layer of tiny moving hair.
What is the function of the Palisade Cell - how is it different?
Function : Absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis.
Difference : It is tall, large surface to absorb water and nutrients, packed with chloroplasts to make food, and long for more light.
What is the function of the Root Hair Cell - how is it different?
Function : Designed for absorbing water from soil.
Difference : It has a large surface area and a thin cell membrane.
What is the function of the Red Blood Cell - how is it different?
Function : Designed to carry oxygen.
Difference : It has a thin outer membrane. It doesn’t have any nucleus and has a large surface area.
What is the function of the Nerve Cell - how is it different?
Function : To carry nerve impulses to different parts of the body.
Difference : It has long connections at each end. It carries electrical signals LIKE a wire.
